Advertising addiction treatment on Google
If you run an addiction treatment program in the United States and want to advertise on Google, the first question isn’t keywords or budget. It’s certification. Google treats addiction services as a restricted category, and an account that skips the steps below won’t get its ads approved.
What the policy covers
Google’s addiction services policy applies to ads for recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services. Its examples include:
- Clinical treatment providers, including inpatient, residential and outpatient programs
- Recovery support services, including sober living environments
- Lead generators and referral agencies for addiction services
- Crisis hotlines for drug and alcohol addiction
The policy applies to every account worldwide. Outside the United States, ads for addiction services aren’t allowed at all. Inside the United States, they’re allowed only after two certifications.
Step one: LegitScript
A provider must first be certified by LegitScript as an addiction services provider. Not every service is eligible: under Google’s policy, sober homes and referral agencies can’t be certified, so they can’t advertise addiction services on Google. LegitScript charges processing and monitoring fees.
Our advice: have your state licenses and accreditations in order before you apply, and keep them current afterward. Certification is monitored, so a change to your program is worth checking against it.
Step two: Google
A LegitScript certification doesn’t switch ads on by itself. Certified U.S. advertisers must also apply to Google for its own certification before their ads can run. Only after both are in place can addiction-related ads serve.
Approval decisions belong to LegitScript and Google. An agency can prepare the applications with you and keep renewals on schedule, but no one can promise an outcome, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
Once you’re approved: how targeting works
Certification gets your ads approved. Google’s health in personalized advertising policy then limits how you can target them. Health, including mental health conditions and counseling for addiction, is a sensitive interest category. In practice:
- Advertiser-curated audiences, such as customer match lists, your own data segments and lookalike segments, can’t be used to promote services in a sensitive category.
- Google’s predefined audiences and location targeting remain available, because sensitive signals are excluded from them.
- People under 18 aren’t eligible for personalized advertising of any kind.
That shifts the work toward what you can control: campaigns built around your levels of care and service area, landing pages that answer a family’s questions, and tracking that tells you which searches produce the calls that become admissions.
What this means for your program
- Plan for the timeline. Certification has to come before your first ad. Build it into any launch or rebrand.
- Keep your records current. When a license, accreditation or program changes, check it against your certification.
- Judge campaigns on admissions. With fewer targeting options, the measure that matters is what an admission costs you, not clicks or raw leads.
How we run it: paid search for treatment providers, why we judge it on cost per admission, and marketing for addiction treatment programs.
