AI Overviews and your treatment center website

Families searching for treatment increasingly see an AI-written summary before they see a list of websites. It’s tempting to assume that showing up in those summaries takes a new trick. Google’s own documentation says otherwise.

What Google says

Google’s guidance for site owners, AI features and your website, is direct: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization is necessary. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Beyond that, the usual practices apply.

Google also lists what isn’t needed: new machine-readable files, AI-specific text files, or special structured data created just for AI features.

The practices that apply

Google’s list of best practices, in its own order, translated for a treatment center site:

  • Let Google crawl your site. Check robots.txt and any hosting or CDN settings that might block it.
  • Make pages findable through internal links. Every level of care and every location should be reachable from your menus and related pages.
  • Provide a good page experience. Fast on a phone, easy to read, with a call button that works.
  • Keep important content in text. Programs, levels of care, insurance and admissions steps belong in readable text, not only in images or PDFs.
  • Support text with relevant images and video. Real photos of your facility and team, described with alt text.
  • Make structured data match what’s visible. If your markup names a service, a location or a clinician, the page should say the same thing.
  • Keep your Business Profile current. Hours, phone number, address and services for every facility.

What this means for treatment providers

Health content is held to a high standard, and treatment content more than most. The sites that earn a place, in classic results and in AI answers, tend to show who stands behind their clinical claims: named clinicians with credentials, licenses and accreditations where families can see them, and accurate facility details.

That’s slow work, and there are no shortcuts. Be wary of anyone selling an AI-only file or a guaranteed spot in AI answers; Google’s documentation says inclusion isn’t guaranteed even for pages that meet every requirement.

How to tell whether it’s working

Google counts appearances in AI features in Search Console’s Performance report, under the Web search type. For a treatment program, the better test is the same as always: whether organic search produces calls that qualify and admissions that follow.

How we do this work: SEO and AI search, treatment center websites, and admissions and marketing readiness, which keeps the facts AI answers draw on current.
